LinkedIn Company Page vs. LinkedIn Profile

Quick Answer

Use LinkedIn Company Page (linkedin.com/company/...) for your Organization listing and LinkedIn Profile (linkedin.com/in/...) for your personal Profile listing. Organization listings link to business pages; Profile listings link to personal profiles.

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Using Personal LinkedIn on Organization Listing

Wrong: Adding linkedin.com/in/johnsmith to your law firm's Organization listing

Correct: Add linkedin.com/company/smithlawfirm to the Organization listing, and linkedin.com/in/johnsmith to your personal Profile listing

Mistake 2: Using Company LinkedIn on Profile Listing

Wrong: Adding linkedin.com/company/smithlawfirm to your personal Profile listing

Correct: Add linkedin.com/in/johnsmith to your Profile listing

Mistake 3: Not Having a Company Page

If your business doesn't have a LinkedIn Company Page:

  • Consider creating one (it's free)

  • Or leave the LinkedIn field empty on your Organization listing

  • Your personal LinkedIn still goes on your Profile listing

Creating a LinkedIn Company Page

If you don't have a Company Page yet:

  1. Log in to LinkedIn with your personal account

  2. Click "For Business" in the top menu

  3. Select "Create a Company Page"

  • Creating a LinkedIn Company Page is free

  • Not all businesses need a Company Page (restaurants, retail, etc.)

  • Personal profiles show your credentials; Company Pages show your business

FAQs

What if I don't have a LinkedIn Company Page? You can create one for free, or leave the field empty. Having a Company Page adds professionalism but isn't required.

Can I use my personal LinkedIn on my Organization listing? It's not recommended. The Organization listing represents your business, so it should link to your business page. Use your personal LinkedIn on your Profile listing.

I'm a solo practitioner. Do I need both? Consider having both: a personal Profile showing your credentials, and a Company Page for your business name/brand. But many solo practitioners use only a personal profile.

What if my company and personal LinkedIn have similar names? Check the URL: /company/ = business page, /in/ = personal profile. Use the appropriate one for each listing type.

Do I need LinkedIn at all? LinkedIn is optional. If your industry doesn't use LinkedIn much (restaurants, retail), feel free to skip it. Focus on platforms your clients actually use.
