Quick Answer

Event Categories are required for event listings. Select up to 10 categories from the hierarchical picker that best describe your event's topic, type, or purpose. Categories help attendees find your event and influence which publications feature it.

Overview

The Event Categories section classifies your event so attendees can find it when browsing or searching. Unlike Profile and Organization listings which use "Industries," events use a specialized category list designed specifically for event types.

Categories are required—you must select at least one before your event can be published.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Open the Event Categories Section

Navigate to your Edit Event page and expand the "Event Categories" section.

Step 2: Click Add Event Category

Click the "Add Event Category +" button to open the category picker.

Step 3: Browse or Search Categories

You can either:

  • Browse: Click a top-level category to see its sub-categories

  • Search: Type in the search bar to find specific event types

Step 4: Select Your Category

Click on a category to select it. You can select the top-level category, a specific sub-category, or both for broader coverage.

Step 5: Add Additional Categories

Repeat to add more categories. You can select up to 10 total.

Step 6: Submit Your Changes

Click "Publish Draft" to submit for review.

Important Notes

  • Required: You must select at least one category

  • Maximum 10 categories: Focus on the most relevant classifications

  • Always visible: The Event Categories section cannot be hidden

  • No lead matching: Events don't receive referral leads, so categories only affect discovery and publication placement

FAQs

What if my event type isn't listed? Select the closest available category. If nothing fits well, contact support to suggest adding a new category.

Can I select categories from different top-level groups? Yes. A "Women in Tech Networking Night" could select both "Technology & IT Events" and a networking-related category.

Do categories affect which publications my event appears on? Yes. Categories influence publication placement alongside your Community Connections and Languages selections.

How many categories should I select? Select all genuinely relevant categories, but don't overdo it. 2-5 well-chosen categories typically work best.
