Why Jobs Use a Flat List
Profile and Organization listings use hierarchical industry pickers with dozens of sub-specialties. Jobs use a simpler approach for several reasons:
Listing Type | Industry Structure | Why |
Profile/Organization | Hierarchical (deep sub-categories) | Precise lead matching requires specificity |
Job | Flat (26 categories) | Broad categorization helps candidates browse; job descriptions provide specifics |
The job description itself contains the detailed requirements—industries just help candidates find the right category of jobs.
How Job Industries Help Candidates
Category Browsing
Candidates can browse jobs by industry:
"Show me all Information Technology jobs"
"Show me Legal jobs in Houston"
"Show me Healthcare Services positions"
Search Relevance
Industry keywords help surface your job in relevant searches.
Publication Placement
Job Industries influence which Heritage Web publications feature your job posting.
Important Notes
Required: You must select at least one industry
Maximum 10: Focus on the most relevant categories
No lead matching: Jobs don't receive referral leads, so industries only affect discovery and placement
Always visible: The Job Industries section cannot be hidden
No sub-categories: Unlike other listing types, jobs use a flat single-level list
FAQs
Why can't I drill down into sub-categories like on my Profile? Jobs use a simplified flat list. The 26 broad categories cover the major employment sectors, while your job description provides the specific details candidates need.
Can I select industries that partially apply? Select industries where a candidate searching that category would genuinely be interested in your role. A "Marketing Analyst" role might select both "Marketing" and "Research."
Do Job Industries affect lead matching? No. Jobs don't receive referral leads—industries only affect how candidates discover your posting and which publications feature it.
What if my job spans multiple departments? Select all relevant industries. A "Sales Engineer" might select both "Sales" and "Engineering."
