Skills Don't Affect Lead Matching

Quick Answer

Skills you add to your Profile are display-only keywords—they appear on your listing but do not affect which referral leads you receive. To control lead matching, use the Industries section instead. This is a common point of confusion, so it's important to understand the difference.

Overview

Many users assume that adding skills like "Immigration Law" or "Personal Injury" will generate leads in those areas. It won't. Skills are free-form tags that help visitors understand your expertise, but our lead matching system ignores them entirely.

The lead matching system uses:

  • ✓ Industries (your selected services)

  • ✓ Languages (you or your team)

  • ✓ Licenses (verified credentials)

  • ✓ Location (75-mile radius from your ZIP)

  • ✓ Community Connections (for publication assignment)

The lead matching system does NOT use:

  • ✗ Skills

  • ✗ Education

  • ✗ Associations

What to Do Instead

If you want to receive leads for a service area:

  1. Go to your Industries section

  2. Select the relevant industry and specialty

  3. Save and submit your changes

  4. You'll now match with leads requesting that service

Example:

  • ❌ Adding "Immigration Law" as a Skill = No immigration leads

  • ✓ Selecting "Immigration Law" in Industries = Immigration leads

FAQs

I added skills but I'm not getting leads. Why? Skills don't generate leads. Check your Industries section and make sure you've selected the services you want to receive leads for.

Should I still add skills? Yes—they're helpful for visitors browsing your listing. Just don't rely on them for lead matching. Add the same services to both Skills (for display) and Industries (for matching).

What are skills good for? Skills help with profile completeness, visitor understanding, and potentially search visibility. They're just not part of the lead matching algorithm.
